Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr highlighted his team’s defensive approach after a 126-116 Christmas Day win over the Dallas Mavericks. “I’m not sure how much of it was our defense… we kept them off the three-point line,” Kerr said, noting that Dallas shot 55 percent but took mostly tough shots.

Kerr emphasized the team’s healthy rotation and frontcourt depth. “Getting Al back today was huge… our centers are all playing well,” he said, highlighting Al Horford’s return from a seven-game absence due to sciatica. Horford scored 14 points and helped the Warriors generate separation early.

The coach praised De’Anthony Melton’s aggressiveness in just 24 minutes. “He’s been aggressive since he came back… his defense is excellent and he gives us another ball handler out there,” Kerr said, referencing Melton’s season-high performance.

Kerr described Horford as a key factor in the win. “The way he picks and pops as a five-man really opens up the floor… making four threes in the first quarter opened up the game. We scored 40 points and played with the lead the rest of the way,” he said.

The Warriors’ ball movement drew particular praise. “The ball moved and guys got open looks… 33 assists tonight shows we’re taking care of the ball and getting plenty of attempts,” Kerr said, noting contributions from seven players in double digits. Jimmy Butler added nine assists and nine rebounds alongside 14 points.

Offensive rebounding and floor spacing were other focal points. “Crashing on offense has been really good the last few weeks… having bigger guys out there with Trayce and Al makes us more capable of taking care of the defensive glass as well,” Kerr explained. The team recorded 13 offensive boards against the Mavericks.

Kerr also discussed defensive strategy, emphasizing containment of penetration and transition scoring. “If we can keep teams from getting the easy stuff, we feel good about our ability to slow them down,” he said, highlighting the team’s modern defensive approach.

Finally, Kerr addressed Klay Thompson facing his former team. “I’ll never get used to seeing Klay on the other side. I miss Klay. Wish he was still here,” he said, reflecting on the former sharpshooter’s impact. Thompson received a warm ovation but finished with limited minutes.

The Warriors improve to 16-15, led by Stephen Curry’s 23 points, while Dallas falls to 12-20. Kerr’s comments underscore the balance, depth, and strategic rotations that have allowed Golden State to secure a hard-fought holiday victory.
