Phoenix Suns head coach Jordan Ott highlighted his team’s ball movement following a 132-108 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. “Definitely a great night for that. Book’s ability to create a closeout… we lived in closeouts. That leads to 35 assists,” Ott said, praising Devin Booker’s role in setting up teammates.
Ott credited the third-quarter surge to the starting group’s intensity. “Our intent out of the locker room… Mark was fantastic, really put an imprint into the game in that third quarter specifically. We need him, and we got him tonight,” he said, referencing Mark Williams’ 18 points and nine rebounds.
The coach appreciated the team’s focus despite holiday distractions. “These are tricky games… but that’s not what this group does. They bring the juice, bring the energy. Hopefully, we’re like that every night,” Ott said.
Regarding injured forward Jaylen, Ott confirmed steady progress. “Getting more and more on the court. Once that strength is at 100%, he’ll be full go,” he explained, noting the importance of patience and recovery.
Ott also lauded the impact of Jamaree Bouyea off the bench. “The ability to break the paint… real speed, longer than you think. Defensively, he contests shots and grabs some rebounds. Both ends, he’s in the right spot a lot,” Ott said. He noted Bouyea’s versatility and role in maintaining momentum when starters rest.
The Suns’ depth was another key factor in the win. “Playing hard is a skill… that group not only plays hard but plays well together,” Ott said, citing the second unit’s performance in sustaining the lead and contributing to a balanced attack.
He also reflected on Dillon Brooks’ unusual stat line: 25 points with no rebounds, assists, steals, or turnovers. “I like the points. We love everything he does. We didn’t need anything else other than that tonight. Next night, he might have double-figure rebounds. Whatever it takes to win,” Ott said.
On communication and defensive coordination, Ott emphasized its importance. “Communication starts with your quarterback with your fives… Mark had a really, really good night. He’s guarding LeBron, Austin Reaves, Nick Smith. Communication is always top of the list,” he said.
Brooks led all scorers with 25 points while Booker added 21 points and 11 assists. Collin Gillespie contributed 16 points as all five Suns starters finished in double figures. Phoenix outscored Los Angeles 45-29 in the third quarter to pull away decisively.
