The Wizards are on track to get a key piece back in the lineup Thursday when Alex Sarr is expected to return against the Spurs after missing the entire month of December with an adductor injury.
Washington’s latest injury report did not list either Sarr or Bilal Coulibaly, signaling that both young players are trending toward availability after recent absences.
Sarr has appeared in 16 of the team’s 24 games this season and has been one of Washington’s most consistent performers when healthy. In just under 30 minutes per game, he is averaging 19.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.
He has also taken a noticeable step forward as a scorer, improving his shooting efficiency from 39.4% as a rookie to 51.5% in his second season.
Coulibaly’s year has been far less stable. Injuries have limited him to only 12 appearances, and his offensive production has suffered as a result.
He is averaging 8.8 points in 27.2 minutes per game and has posted career-low efficiency numbers, shooting 37.4% from the field and 26.8% from three-point range.
Even so, Washington views the return of both French prospects as a significant boost, particularly on the defensive end.
The Wizards currently rank last in the league in defensive rating, and Sarr and Coulibaly are expected to play central roles in shoring up that weakness.
Together, they are averaging 3.0 blocks and 2.1 steals per game, though they have only shared the floor in eight games so far this season.
