Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett is officially rejoining the Minnesota Timberwolves, ending nearly a decade-long separation between the franchise and its most iconic player. The news was first reported Thursday by Shams Charania.

According to Charania, Garnett is returning in a broad, all-encompassing role that will include business initiatives, community engagement, and content development with both the Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx. The move also clears the way for Garnett’s long-awaited No. 21 jersey retirement in Minnesota.

Garnett had remained distant from the organization since retiring in 2016 due to a fallout with former owner Glen Taylor. During that time, he publicly declined a jersey retirement, despite being the most accomplished player in franchise history.

That dynamic changed following the arrival of new ownership. Garnett built a relationship with Timberwolves owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, with both sides finding common ground that led to the reunion.

Garnett’s return comes at a time when Minnesota is firmly positioned as a contender in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves sit at 17-10 in the 2025–26 season, led by Anthony Edwards, who is averaging 28.7 points per game across 20 starts.

The current roster reflects a balance of scoring, defense, and experience. Julius Randle is posting 23.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while Rudy Gobert anchors the paint with 10.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per contest.

While Garnett will not have an on-court or coaching role, his presence carries symbolic and cultural weight. His connection to the franchise’s identity and competitive standards aligns with a team that has legitimate postseason aspirations.
