The Mavericks didn’t get immediate results when they opened the season with Cooper Flagg as their starting point guard, but both Flagg and head coach Jason Kidd believe the experience was valuable for the rookie’s development.

According to Eddie Sefko of Mavs.com, the early experiment was viewed as a learning opportunity rather than a short-term solution.

“For sure, I think it definitely helped me to grow,” Flagg said. “I learned a lot in that short period of time.”

He noted that the team faced tough losses early, but said the experience helped him become more comfortable and aware on the floor.

“I’d never really played point guard before,” Flagg added. “It’s a lot different than any other position. You have to be aware of a lot of other things.”

Kidd acknowledged the move wasn’t popular, but emphasized the long-term perspective.

“This is an 18-year-old playing against the best players in the world,” he said.

While the numbers didn’t always reflect success, Kidd felt the player handled the responsibility well.

“We’re playing the long game with him,” the coach said, praising Flagg’s openness to new roles and his willingness to learn.
