Magic guard Jalen Suggs was in the middle of a high-scoring duel with Knicks star Jalen Brunson during Saturday’s NBA Cup semifinal before a hip injury forced him out in the third quarter, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.

Suggs was clearly in pain while speaking to reporters afterward and will undergo further evaluation when the team returns to Orlando.

The possibility of missing time was difficult for the palyer to accept.

“It’s the part that sucks the most,” he said. “I truly tried (to play). There’s nowhere else I would have rather been than on the court battling with my guys.” He added that he’s trying to accept the situation. “But (God) be having other plans, and I can’t be mad at his plans.”

Suggs said he wasn’t sure what caused the injury.

“I don’t even know,” he said. “We’ll figure out what it is.”

The injury occurred on a drive to the basket when OG Anunoby knocked the ball loose, prompting Suggs to grab at his left hip. He briefly tried to continue before being removed from the game.

Before exiting, Suggs was having one of the best halves of his career, scoring 25 points before halftime and finishing with 26 in just over 29 minutes. New York pulled away late for a 132-120 win.

Injuries have been a recurring issue for Suggs throughout his career, and Orlando has also been shorthanded this season, contributing to a 15-11 record.
