The Lakers’ winning record has helped gloss over ongoing defensive problems, but those issues have been present all season, according to Broderick Turner of The Los Angeles Times.

Despite a 17-7 start, Los Angeles ranks in the bottom half of the league in points allowed, opponent shooting percentage, and three-point defense.

Jarred Vanderbilt believes he can help address those concerns if given more opportunity.

With Austin Reaves sidelined by a mild calf strain, a rotation spot has opened, potentially starting Sunday in Phoenix.

“Oh, yeah, I’m pretty eager,” Vanderbilt said after practice. “I think a lot of the stuff we lack, I think I can help provide on that end.”

Vanderbilt’s limited offensive output has kept him mostly on the bench, but his defensive impact could become more valuable if coach J.J. Redick prioritizes stops.

Lakers forward noted the issues aren’t new.

“It’s been a trending thing even when we was winning,” he said, adding that recent losses may force the team to address the problem before it grows.

Vanderbilt has played 8 seasons for 4 teams, including the Lakers and Timberwolves. He has averaged 6.2 rebounds and 5.8 points in 324 regular-season games.
