Sixers center Andre Drummond left Friday’s game in Brooklyn after suffering a right knee sprain in the first half, the team announced through a post shared by Tony Jones of The Athletic.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the early read is a hyperextended knee, though Drummond will undergo more testing to determine how serious the injury is.
The injury occurred when the player was knocked off balance in the air by teammate Kyle Lowry while fighting for a defensive rebound.
According to Jones, the 32-year-old couldn’t put weight on his right leg and had to be helped off the floor before being taken to the locker room in a wheelchair.
With Drummond sidelined, second-year big Adem Bona – returning from a right ankle sprain of his own – started the second half.
The injury comes at a difficult moment for Philadelphia, which just got Paul George back from an ankle sprain and has been without Joel Embiid due to right knee soreness.
Drummond had stepped into the starting lineup for the past eight games, averaging 10.9 points and 13.8 rebounds while even adding three-point shooting to his game, hitting 9 of 22 attempts entering Friday.
The big man is earning $5MM in the final season of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Bona, Dominick Barlow, Jabari Walker, and Johni Broome are likely candidates for increased minutes in his absence.
