Georges Niang is set to be re-evaluated in 10 to 14 days as he works toward returning from a fourth metatarsal stress reaction in his left foot, the Jazz announced in a Saturday press release.
This injury has kept him from appearing in a game since Utah acquired him from Boston in a trade that sent rookie second-rounder RJ Luis to the Celtics in exchange for Niang and two second-round picks, a move partly aimed at helping Boston clear its financial books.
Niang is familiar to the Jazz organization, having spent five seasons in Utah after beginning his career with the Pacers.
Last season, he split time between Cleveland and Atlanta, posting averages of 16.6 points and 5.8 rebounds while hitting 40.6% of his attempts from three-point range.
Even with Utah sitting at 5-10, the franchise has signaled its intention to return to competitiveness sooner rather than later.
Niang is viewed as someone who can contribute both through his steady locker-room presence and his dependable offensive output at the power forward position.
With starting center Walker Kessler out for the season, Utah’s frontcourt depth is thin, and Niang’s eventual return could provide needed support.
He would be capable of fitting into the rotation either playing alongside Kevin Love or taking his place when needed.
