Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant is at the center of trade speculation following a recent clash with head coach Tuomas Iisalo. The incident led to Morant’s suspension for Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors.
The conflict reportedly occurred after a postgame meeting following a 117–112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. In that matchup, Morant scored eight points on 3-of-14 shooting, including 0-for-6 from three-point range, and left the bench during a timeout in visible frustration.
A league source told ESPN that the potential return for Morant could resemble the 2023 trade that sent Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets to the Dallas Mavericks. That deal yielded the Nets Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 unprotected first-round pick, and two second-round selections.
The Sacramento Kings and the Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly monitoring Morant’s situation. A league source confirmed that the Kings have not yet engaged Memphis in trade discussions but could reconsider if circumstances change.
Memphis appears to be limiting Morant’s role as the team shifts its focus toward Jaren Jackson Jr., who recently signed a contract extension. Morant has not yet received similar long-term discussions, fueling speculation about his future.
Despite the off-court issues, Morant’s early-season performance remains strong, averaging 20.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game. His shooting efficiency, however, stands at 38.3% from the field.
NBA insiders remain cautious about the trade market for Morant. Tim Bontemps of The Hoop Collective suggested that a robust market may not exist due to positional depth across the league and questions about his long-term fit with potential suitors.
Sacramento general manager Scott Perry, known for orchestrating high-profile roster transformations in Detroit, Orlando, and New York, is expected to closely follow developments surrounding Morant and other elite talent. The Kings’ approach could be influenced by any change in Memphis’ strategy or Morant’s behavior on and off the court.
