The Sacramento Kings are reportedly monitoring Ja Morant’s situation in Memphis, according to Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee. A league source confirmed the Kings have not yet engaged the Grizzlies in trade talks but could reconsider if circumstances change.
Memphis is dealing with internal tension after Morant clashed with head coach Tuomas Iisalo, resulting in a suspension for Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors. The conflict reportedly followed a postgame meeting after a 117–112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Morant’s on-court performance has also drawn attention. In the Lakers matchup, he scored eight points on 3-of-14 shooting and went 0-for-6 from three, walking away from the bench during a timeout in visible frustration.
The Grizzlies appear to be placing limits on Morant’s behavior, signaling a potential re-evaluation of their long-term plans. Tim MacMahon of The Hoop Collective noted that Memphis seems to be shifting its focus toward Jaren Jackson Jr., who recently signed a contract extension, while Morant has yet to receive similar discussions.
Despite the challenges, Morant’s early-season numbers remain strong, averaging 20.4 points, 7.1 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. However, his 40.6% shooting from the field highlights ongoing efficiency concerns as Memphis adapts to Iisalo’s system.
Speculation about a Morant trade has emerged, though skepticism persists. Tim Bontemps mentioned on The Hoop Collective podcast that a robust market for the guard may not exist due to positional depth across the NBA and questions about his long-term fit.
The Kings, led by general manager Scott Perry, are experienced in evaluating high-end talent and roster transformations, having overseen moves in Detroit, Orlando, and New York. Perry is expected to closely monitor all developments involving Morant and other elite players.
