LeBron James is inching closer to his 2025-26 season debut after missing the entire preseason due to a right-sided sciatica issue, according to NBA insider Shams Charania on NBA Today. The Lakers superstar has been working out individually, with the next step expected to be five-on-five live action.

James, who turns 41 next month and enters his 23rd NBA season, will not join the Lakers for their upcoming five-game road trip starting in Atlanta this weekend. It remains uncertain whether he will participate in live action during the road stretch, potentially with the G League South Bay team, or wait until the team returns on November 16 to begin that process.

The Lakers currently hold a 7-2 record, fueled by strong performances from Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Deandre Ayton. Doncic is averaging 40 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists over five games, while Reaves contributes 31 points and nine assists per game. Ayton has recorded 17.5 points and 8.4 rebounds in 31.5 minutes per contest.

Charania noted the importance of the Lakers’ offseason acquisitions of Jake LaRavia, Ayton, and Marcus Smart. The trio has provided valuable depth while James recovers, helping Los Angeles maintain a strong start without one of the greatest players in NBA history.

Lakers coach JJ Redick and general manager Rob Pelinka have emphasized caution with James’ return. Mid-November remains the tentative target for his first regular-season game, though the timeline is considered fluid due to the combination of age, injury history, and current team schedule.

The Lakers have demonstrated resilience in James’ absence, with notable road victories over Sacramento, Minnesota, Memphis, and Portland. Reaves delivered multiple high-scoring games, including 51 points against Sacramento and 41 against Portland, while Ayton posted a 29-point, 10-rebound performance against Portland on November 3.

LeBron’s eventual return could provide a significant boost as the team navigates a five-game road swing and prepares for the post-November stretch, where maintaining momentum will be key for playoff positioning.
