Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd addressed his team’s 122-110 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night, citing turnovers and missed shots in the fourth quarter as key factors.

“When you look at the start of that fourth quarter, we turned the ball over twice. We missed some layups. Points off turnovers was extremely high for us tonight,” Kidd said, emphasizing the need for better ball control.

Kidd highlighted the Mavericks’ offensive strengths, noting the team made 16 three-pointers, a season high. “We played fast, we relocated and found open guys. We left some on the table, and if we had made a couple more, maybe it’s different going into the fourth quarter,” he added.

The absence of Anthony Davis, Derek Lively, and limited minutes for Daniel Gafford was also discussed. Kidd said, “In this league, you got to play with the guys that you have. For three quarters, we put ourselves in a position to win, but in the fourth they dominated the paint and capitalized off our turnovers.”

D’Angelo Russell’s leadership received praise from Kidd, who noted, “He was great on both ends. His communication skills helped us stay organized and he was big offensively, knocking down shots while helping teammates on the floor.”

The coach also touched on the challenges of playing at high altitude in Mexico City. “Everybody was breathing heavy. It’s real, and the guys did a great job given the conditions,” Kidd said.

Despite the loss, Kidd found positives in the international experience. “Take the win-loss out of the equation—the atmosphere, the fans, and the venue were incredible. Being able to play here is special,” he said, reflecting on the NBA’s ongoing efforts to grow basketball globally.

Dallas trailed 93-87 after three quarters before Detroit outscored them 35-17 in the fourth. Jalen Duren led the Pistons with a career-high 33 points and 10 rebounds, while Cade Cunningham added 21 points and 18 assists.

The Mavericks will host the Houston Rockets on Monday, while Kidd hopes Davis will return soon. “If he is out, we have to continue to find a way to win,” Kidd said.
