Wizards exercise 2026–27 options on six players

The Washington Wizards have officially exercised their team options for the 2026–27 season on six young players, the team announced in a press release.

The decision had been expected following Josh Robbins’ earlier report from The Athletic and locks in a combined total of about $38.3 million in guaranteed salaries for that season.

The players with exercised options are Alex Sarr (third year, $12,370,680), Bilal Coulibaly (fourth year, $9,240,012), Cam Whitmore (fourth year, $5,458,310), Bub Carrington (third year, $4,900,560), AJ Johnson (third year, $3,237,120), and Kyshawn George (third year, $3,108,000).

Coulibaly and Whitmore were first-round picks in the 2023 NBA Draft, while Sarr, Carrington, Johnson, and George all joined the Wizards in 2024.

Each player has shown varying levels of involvement so far this season – with George and Sarr standing out as early contributors.

George has emerged as the team’s leading scorer, averaging 20.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting an impressive 53.8% from beyond the arc.

Sarr has been equally effective, posting 19.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game through the team’s first four contests.

While Coulibaly continues to recover from offseason thumb surgery and has yet to debut this year, and Johnson has only seen limited late-game minutes, both will become eligible for rookie-scale extensions in July 2026.

If no deals are reached, they would enter restricted free agency in 2027.

Looking ahead, the Wizards will have to make additional rookie-scale option decisions next fall for Sarr, Carrington, Johnson, and George regarding the 2027–28 season, depending on their development and roles moving forward.
