Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla confirmed he has no intention of leaving the organization despite recent speculation linking him to other NBA opportunities.
“I’m gonna be here for however long ownership and the city will have me,” Mazzulla said, via NBC Sports Boston, adding that coaching elsewhere is not on his radar.
The 37-year-old led Boston to the 18th NBA championship in 2024 and has compiled a 182-64 regular season record and a 33-17 postseason mark since taking over as the team’s 19th head coach in February 2023. His .740 regular-season win rate ranks among the league’s best.
Mazzulla described the reported multiyear contract extension with the Celtics as “a blessing” and emphasized his focus on faith, family, and the organization.
“There’s no other team that I’m coaching. It’s here, or I’m gonna go coach my kid’s soccer team or something like that,” he added.
Boston’s president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, praised Mazzulla’s leadership, highlighting his 16-3 playoff run in 2024 as the second-best postseason winning percentage since 2003. Despite the team’s second-round exit in 2024-25 after Jayson Tatum’s season-ending Achilles injury, the Celtics remain committed to continuity at the helm.
Sources report the extension is believed to be six years, mirroring the length of Stevens’ deal when he became head coach in 2013. Financial terms were not disclosed, but coaching insiders interpret the pact as a long-term vote of confidence in Mazzulla’s vision.
The Celtics’ ownership recently changed hands, with private equity investor William Chisholm purchasing the franchise for $6.1 billion. Despite the transition, Boston appears focused on stability, pairing a championship-caliber roster with a proven coach.
Mazzulla, who grew up in Rhode Island as a Celtics fan, becomes the youngest coach to win an NBA Finals since Bill Russell in 1969. The extension likely secures his role in Boston through at least the 2030–31 season, signaling the organization’s commitment to contending for future titles under his guidance.
