Paul Pierce was arrested Tuesday night in Los Angeles, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say Pierce was discovered asleep behind the wheel of his Range Rover, which was positioned in the middle of traffic on the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

The incident occurred after officers had closed lanes to investigate a separate crash. When the roadway reopened at about 11:35 p.m., police noticed the vehicle and found Pierce unresponsive in the driver’s seat.

“Officers noted signs of alcohol impairment,” the CHP said in its statement, “and conducted a DUI investigation.”

The agency added, “Pierce was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, a violation of California Vehicle Code 23152(a), and taken to the CHP Central Los Angeles Area office.”

Pierce, nicknamed “The Truth,” has not yet released a public statement regarding the arrest. The 19-year NBA veteran, who spent the bulk of his career starring for the Celtics, has been involved in sports media since retiring.

Earlier this year, he made headlines when he agreed to walk from his home in the San Fernando Valley to Fox Studios in West Los Angeles after losing a playoff bet on the Celtics.
