Ja Morant sprains ankle, opener in doubt

The Memphis Grizzlies’ preseason took a hit Sunday when star guard Ja Morant went down in practice.

A team spokesperson confirmed that “Ja Morant sprained his left ankle during Sunday’s practice and is considered week-to-week,” per Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The setback almost guarantees Morant will sit out Memphis’ five preseason games and “jeopardizes his availability for the regular season opener October 22 against New Orleans.”

Injuries have been a recurring hurdle for the star guard. He was limited to 50 appearances last season with a surgically repaired right shoulder and later suffered a hip issue that kept him out of the final playoff game against Oklahoma City.

Across his career, durability has been a concern – he “has never played more than 67 games in a season, and that total came as a rookie.”

Still, Morant was highly productive when available, averaging 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 4.1 rebounds last season. With Desmond Bane now in Orlando, Memphis “will rely on his scoring more than ever.”

Until Morant returns, Scotty Pippen Jr., who “made 21 starts last season,” is expected to handle the point guard role.
