The New York Knicks are facing an important financial decision involving Karl-Anthony Towns after announcing that contract extension negotiations with eligible players will be delayed until later in the season.

The decision comes as the franchise attempts to manage its salary commitments following its NBA championship.

Team owner James Dolan has reportedly instructed the Knicks’ front office to avoid crossing the NBA’s second luxury tax apron, creating additional challenges in negotiations with several players.

Towns is among those affected, along with Josh Hart, Miles McBride and Tyler Kolek.

According to league sources, New York has been considering an extension for Towns worth close to $200 million, considerably below the four-year, $276 million maximum he is eligible to sign.

However, the most immediate concern involves Towns’ $61 million player option for next season.

The center must decline that option by October 19 if he wants to remain eligible to negotiate a contract extension with the Knicks during the current season.

If Towns does not decline the option before the deadline, NBA rules would prevent New York from discussing an extension with him or his representatives until after the season.

In that situation, Towns would move into the final year of his existing contract, leaving his future with the franchise unresolved.

The Knicks must balance their desire to retain key players with the financial restrictions established by ownership.

Towns’ upcoming decision could therefore have significant implications for the team’s long-term roster planning.

With the October 19 deadline approaching, the Knicks and Towns face an important period that could determine when the two sides are able to resume negotiations.
