Rudy Gobert delivered a strong showing in Minnesota’s preseason opener, and afterward the veteran center explained that he’s feeling refreshed following a summer away from international competition, Jon Krawczynski reported.
The big man had suited up for France in the 2024 Olympics, but when EuroBasket rolled around later in the offseason, he decided to sit out.
“As much as I love it, I had to make the decision this summer to focus on recharging the batteries,” Gobert said.
Taking the break gave him a chance to approach training differently, as he explained: “It also allows me to work differently – work on my body, get stronger.”
The three-time Defensive Player of the Year admitted it wasn’t an easy call, given his pride in representing his country.
“As a competitor, it’s never easy,” he said. “But you’ve also got to be smart about thinking about what’s best for your body and your mind.”
Gobert has played 12 seasons for the Jazz and Timberwolves. He has averaged 12.6 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 829 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 3 All-Star games, and has won 4 Defensive Player of the Year awards.
