The San Antonio Spurs handled the Guangzhou Loong-Lions with a 119-88 victory in their preseason debut on Monday, at Frost Bank Center. Keldon Johnson and Julian Champagnie each scored 16 points to lead the hosts.
San Antonio jumped ahead 34-22 after the first quarter behind Victor Wembanyama’s nine points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks. The Spurs built a 74-45 halftime cushion with 40 second-quarter points.
Guangzhou struggled with 20 turnovers against San Antonio’s 14 steals. Frank Kaminsky topped the Loong-Lions with 22 points on five three-pointers.
Victor Oladipo added 20 points and five steals for the visitors. Chen Guohao contributed 14 points off the bench.
The Spurs dominated inside with 54 points in the paint to Guangzhou’s 20. San Antonio also outscored the Loong-Lions 20-5 in fast-break points.
Luke Kornet notched 16 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the Spurs bench. Carter Bryant tallied 15 points, including three three-pointers.
Guangzhou shot 37.7% from the field and 32.4% from three. The Loong-Lions managed just 30 rebounds to San Antonio’s 52.
Wembanyama dished seven assists in 16 minutes before resting. His tip dunks and blocks set the tone early.
San Antonio connected on 53.8% of shots overall and 39.5% from deep. The Spurs forced 20 turnovers while committing 23.
Oladipo’s step-back jumpers kept Guangzhou close at times. He finished with three assists despite eight misses from three.
The third quarter saw the lead balloon to 92-72 after a Minix three-pointer. San Antonio’s depth overwhelmed the CBA squad.
David Jones-Garcia grabbed four steals and four points for the Spurs. Bryant added two steals in the fourth.
Guangzhou’s bench scored 40 points but couldn’t match San Antonio’s 45 from reserves. The Loong-Lions trailed by 31 entering the final frame.
Tim Frazier handed out five assists in 25 minutes for Guangzhou. He scored five points with three turnovers.
San Antonio’s 31 assists highlighted ball movement. The Spurs bench outscored Guangzhou’s 66-40.
