Former Chicago Bulls star Toni Kukoc shared his thoughts on Michael Jordan’s legacy, calling him a GOAT of basketball while cautioning against cross-era comparisons. According to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Kukoc said, “I can’t say the best player, but he is a GOAT of basketball.”
Kukoc emphasized that comparing players from different eras is inherently difficult since they never competed directly against one another. “It’s hard to compare players that never played in the same era; that never played against each other,” he noted, pointing out the importance of head-to-head records or team matchups.
He also acknowledged the evolution of basketball, noting that modern players benefit from advanced knowledge of nutrition, injury recovery, and training techniques. “These days you can see all the older previous players and you can get all their moves… how to get rid of your injuries faster, how to keep your body in shape,” Kukoc said.
The Croatian forward highlighted that while today’s athletes have more resources, past legends like Jordan set the standard for greatness. “Michael obviously brought world basketball to another level,” Kukoc stated, likening Jordan to Tiger Woods in golf, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in soccer, and Michael Phelps in swimming.
Kukoc argued that Jordan’s impact helped shape the next generation of stars, paving the way for players like LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Jokic. “From that point on, LeBron is what LeBron is now, that he gave a chance for Luka to be Luka or Jokic be Jokic,” he said.
He concluded that the game’s evolution makes direct comparisons nearly impossible. “When it comes to pure – like okay, Michael from the ‘80’s and ‘90’s or LeBron from 2000 or 2010’s, you can’t say one was better than the other,” Kukoc added.
