Ja Morant has decided to take a different approach to his career management by handling the negotiations for his next NBA contract on his own, without the use of an agent.

Throughout the first part of his career, Morant had professional representation. He was initially managed by Jim Hill during his first five seasons in the league, before switching to former NBA player Mike Miller, who worked with him for roughly a year.

During that time, Morant secured a significant deal: in July 2022, he agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $197 million with the Memphis Grizzlies.

As of this offseason, he became eligible to sign an additional two-year extension, though he and Miller parted ways earlier this summer in June.

On the court, Morant continues to be one of the league’s most dynamic guards. Last season, he averaged 23.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.3 assists while playing 30.4 minutes per game across 50 appearances.

His most recent All-Star selection came in 2023, reflecting his status as a high-level performer when available.

While some other NBA stars such as Joel Embiid and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also operate without agents, Morant’s situation carries unique uncertainty.

Unlike Embiid and Gilgeous-Alexander – both of whom are considered clear-cut franchise cornerstones likely to secure maximum contract offers – Morant’s next deal is less certain.

At present, there is no indication that the Grizzlies and Morant have formally begun discussions regarding an extension.
