The Los Angeles Lakers confirmed that JJ Redick has signed a contract extension, securing his position as head coach beyond his original deal.

General manager Rob Pelinka made the announcement during the team’s 2025 Media Day, noting that the franchise wanted to “make it clear” that Redick is the basketball leader for the organization.

Redick, hired in June 2024, guided the Lakers through his first season on the sidelines after a rapid transition from broadcasting to coaching. His return with extended security highlights the front office’s confidence in his leadership and approach.

Pelinka emphasized the Lakers’ offseason progress, pointing to roster upgrades that included acquiring center Deandre Ayton, veteran guard Marcus Smart, and signing Jake LaRavia. The team also extended Luka Doncic and welcomed back LeBron James, who opted in for another season.

Redick expressed gratitude for the extension, saying the trust shown by ownership and management was not lost on him. He acknowledged the rarity of a first-year head coach receiving a new deal and credited his staff for the development work done throughout the offseason.

The 41-year-old coach spent the summer refining his coaching philosophy, learning from NFL coach Sean McVay and former quarterback Tom Brady. He also stressed the importance of conditioning, noting that players including Doncic, James, and Austin Reaves have been preparing daily since mid-August.

For the Lakers, stability at the head coaching position has been a recurring issue in recent years. Since Phil Jackson’s departure in 2011, the franchise has gone through multiple coaching changes before Redick’s hiring. Extending him now signals a commitment to continuity as the team looks to build around Doncic and James.

Redick will enter his second year at the helm with heightened expectations. The Lakers are coming off a season where they showed flashes of strong form, including a six-game winning streak early in the campaign, but fell short of championship contention.
