Luka Doncic has officially committed to the Los Angeles Lakers by agreeing to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The new deal also features a player option for the 2028 season, giving Doncic flexibility down the line while securing his near-term future with the franchise.

During an appearance on SportsCenter, Charania emphasized the strong relationship built between the Slovenian star and the Lakers’ leadership team, saying:

“Jeanie Buss, Rob Pelinka, the new owner Mark Walter have built a close rapport with Luka Doncic and his inner circle to get him to commit here. And now Luka Doncic, he’s going to be the face of this Lakers organization moving forward.”

In addition to solidifying his own commitment, Doncic was active in shaping the Lakers’ offseason moves.

He played a direct role in recruiting veteran guard Marcus Smart and center Deandre Ayton, signaling his intent to help build a contender around him.

This extension also positions Doncic for a historic payday down the road.

If he exercises his player option and continues to meet eligibility criteria, he could sign a five-year supermax contract worth up to $417 million in 2028 – potentially the richest deal in NBA history.
