Ace Bailey reportedly aimed for the Washington Wizards during the 2025 NBA Draft, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. On The Stein Line, Stein reported that the Wizards, holding the sixth overall pick, were the lottery team most favored by Bailey.
Bailey’s camp reportedly declined individual workouts with other teams ahead of the June 25 draft. The strategy appeared designed to steer the rookie toward Washington rather than engaging with rival franchises.
Despite that, Bailey was selected No. 5 overall by the Utah Jazz. A Jazz executive dismissed reports of reluctance, telling Keith Smith of Spotrac, “When Ace was on the board at our pick, it sure took a lot sting out of dropping in the lottery. He’s excited to be with us, and we’re thrilled to have him.”
Bailey skipped several pre-draft workouts, including a session with the Philadelphia 76ers. His decision fueled debate about his maturity and intentions, though Utah remained confident in his talent and fit.
The rookie averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game in his lone college season at Rutgers. He shot 46% from the field and 34.6% from three-point range, establishing himself as a versatile wing with two-way potential.
Although Bailey’s preference for Washington stirred draft speculation, his focus now shifts to contributing to Utah’s lineup. The Jazz see him as a cornerstone for the future, capable of making an impact from Day 1.
