Rich Paul, LeBron James’ agent, emphasized that the Los Angeles Lakers’ priority should be maximizing James’ current playing situation. Speaking to ESPN’s Shams Charania on NBA Today, Paul said it is important not to worry about the future but to “just appreciate the present and also maximizing his present.”
James, who opted in his player option for the 2025-26 season, is playing under a two-year, $104 million deal that includes a no-trade clause.
In the 2024–25 season, James has continued to break records, including becoming the oldest player to record four consecutive triple-doubles and surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for second-most regular season games played. He also surpassed 50,000 career points across regular season and playoffs in March.
Paul noted the uncertainty surrounding James’ career timeline, stating, via ClutchPoints, “Seeing how this year plays out, it’s clear he’s not sure whether he has one year left. Does he have another season after that, 2026-27?” The onus, Paul said, falls on the Lakers to build a team that maximizes James’ impact.
The Lakers’ roster for the 2025–26 season includes key contributors such as Luka Doncic, DeAndre Ayton, Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves, and Marcus Smart.
As the Lakers focus on championship contention, Paul’s comments highlight the importance of immediate team construction and support for James.
