The Miami Heat find themselves in a transition year, entering their first full season after small forward Jimmy Butler’s departure.

They added Norman Powell in a trade, sending out Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson, but otherwise kept a quiet offseason.

Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel notes that the big questions now revolve around contract extensions for Tyler Herro, Powell, and Nikola Jovic.

Herro, fresh off his first All-Star season with career highs of 23.9 points and 5.5 assists, recently had ankle surgery.

He’s eligible for a max three-year, $149.8M extension, but Miami has historically prioritized Bam Adebayo as its franchise cornerstone.

Winderman predicts that if Herro insists on a max deal, no agreement will be reached before the Oct. 20 deadline, pushing him into unrestricted free agency next summer.

As for Jovic, Winderman writes that a more modest long-term extension in the $50–60M range over four years could benefit both sides – providing the young forward with security while giving the Heat a potentially team-friendly deal if his development continues.

Powell, meanwhile, doesn’t fit perfectly alongside Herro in the backcourt and could complicate locker-room dynamics if extended before Herro.

Winderman suggests the Heat will likely wait, though a breakout from Powell in Herro’s absence could boost his extension chances.
