The Miami Heat have agreed to a two-way NBA contract with undrafted guard Tre Donaldson, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. The move gives Miami another young ball-handler after the franchise reshaped its roster around the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks.
Donaldson arrives with a four-year college résumé that included stops at Auburn Tigers men’s basketball, Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball and Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball. As a senior in 2025-26, he averaged 16.4 points, 5.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 35 games while shooting 45.4% from the field and 35.9% from three-point range.
The 6-foot-3 guard became a full-time starter during his final college season, starting 33 of 35 games and playing 34 minutes per night. He attempted 13.1 field goals per game, including 4.8 three-point attempts, showing a larger offensive role compared with his earlier seasons.
Donaldson’s development accelerated after transferring to Michigan before eventually finishing at Miami. During his junior season at Michigan in 2024-25, he averaged 11.3 points and 4.1 assists while shooting 37.5% from deep. Across 139 career college games, he posted averages of 9.4 points, 3.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds.
The signing comes after a major offseason shift for Miami. The Heat finished the 2025-26 regular season 43-39 and entered the play-in tournament before completing a blockbuster deal for Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis. Miami sent a package headlined by Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and multiple draft assets to Milwaukee.
With several young players leaving in the trade, Miami’s two-way additions become more important for roster depth. The Heat already moved their first-round selection, No. 13 overall, to Milwaukee as part of the Antetokounmpo package and later acquired second-round guard Ryan Conwell at No. 37 before adding Donaldson as an undrafted free agent.
Miami’s current guard rotation includes Davion Mitchell, who averaged 6.5 assists per game in 2025-26, along with developing players such as Pelle Larsson and Dru Smith. Donaldson’s ability to handle the ball and create offense gives the Heat another developmental option behind their primary rotation.
The two-way contract allows Donaldson to split time between Miami and the G League while continuing his transition from college lead guard to NBA contributor.
