Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga is locked in contract talks with the franchise, but his agent says rival teams are presenting him with more defined opportunities.
Aaron Turner, Kuminga’s agent, said, via ESPN’s Anthony Slater, on the Hoop Collective podcast that the 22-year-old has been hearing consistent interest across the league. “These other places are offering him opportunities to start games, finish games, know your role,” Turner said.
Turner made clear that Kuminga is not opposed to staying in Golden State. “It is as first class as you get,” he said, pointing to the organization’s facilities and treatment of players. Still, the chance for an expanded role elsewhere has caught Kuminga’s attention.
Contract negotiations between the Warriors and Kuminga remain at a standstill. Golden State has offered a three-year, $75.2 million extension with a team option in the final season, while Kuminga’s camp is pushing for a player option instead.
“If (the Warriors) want to win now … you give him the player option,” Turner said. “You don’t get a perfect deal, but you get a pretty good deal and he gets to feel respected.”
Turner added that Sacramento and Phoenix have been among the teams showing interest. He noted that Kuminga has met with Kings general manager Scott Perry and head coach Doug Christie, with those talks emphasizing a larger role.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Warriors are hesitant to part with Kuminga despite the Kings’ pursuit. One factor cited is ownership dynamics, with Golden State governor Joe Lacob cautious about moving him to a nearby rival led by former Warriors executive Vivek Ranadivé.
Sacramento reportedly proposed a sign-and-trade involving Malik Monk and a protected 2030 first-round pick, which would have positioned Kuminga for a three-year, $63 million contract. Golden State declined, with protections on the pick standing as the main obstacle.
Kuminga is coming off his best NBA season, averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while stepping into a bigger role during stretches without Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green.
With the October 1 deadline approaching, Kuminga could accept the $7.9 million qualifying offer, giving him a no-trade clause for the season but placing him on track for unrestricted free agency in 2026.
