Anthony Slater’s ESPN report sheds more light on the ongoing stalemate between the Golden State Warriors and restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

The two sides didn’t discuss contract terms before free agency, which led Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, to seek sign-and-trade opportunities with other teams.

The Suns and Kings have shown the most interest, but Golden State hasn’t been impressed with their offers so far.

The Warriors want a first-round pick, a promising young player in return, and are reluctant to take on unfavorable contracts in any trade involving Kuminga.

General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. recently made what the team believes is Kuminga’s best offer, but the 22-year-old remains uninterested and seems focused on joining a new team.

The player is considering signing his $7.98 million qualifying offer, a one-year deal that would give him more control and a chance to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026, though it means less money upfront.

One reason for his desire to leave is a “painful memory” of being left out of the Warriors’ playoff rotation last year. He wants a bigger offensive role and a consistent starting spot.

Sources also say Kuminga doesn’t think he can become an All-Star with Golden State and has made it clear privately that he’d prefer to continue his career elsewhere.

He openly discussed his All-Star ambitions in a recent interview with Slater.
