The New York Knicks were one of the league’s most potent offensive teams for much of last season, ranking fifth overall with a 117.3 offensive rating.
However, as noted by Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, that efficiency declined sharply as the year wore on.
Before the All-Star break, the Knicks were averaging an impressive 119.9 points per 100 possessions, but that figure plummeted afterward to just 112.3 points per 100 possessions, ranking only 22nd in the NBA during that stretch.
In the postseason, the struggles continued – their 112.7 offensive rating was the lowest among the four conference finalists.
Knicks guard Miles McBride believes that new head coach Mike Brown, who replaced Tom Thibodeau during the offseason, will provide the spark the team needs to rejuvenate an offense that grew stagnant late last year.
“Last year, we might’ve gotten a little bit stagnant, and the last couple years,” McBride told Bondy.
“And I feel like what [Brown’s] been preaching is just being able to play with pace, and it’s not just the guy with the ball. And everybody is a possibility [to score] and able to take it off the dribble, of course.”
McBride emphasized the team’s mindset heading into the new season, saying the group is “really hungry” after falling just two wins short of reaching the NBA Finals in 2024/25.
He also elaborated on why his conversations with Brown have left him excited about the direction of the offense.
“I’ve talked to [Brown] a lot, and I think the big thing is just going to be a lot of player movement,” McBride explained.
“He’s giving us the foundation, and we’re just going to work off of it. So I’m really excited to see all our creativity with each other that we’ve been working on these last couple months. Really excited to see where it takes us.”
