But Rico Hines’ private run is different.
Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Rico Hines has been organizing private runs for a decade, which began in 2015, inside the UCLA Student Activities Center. From NBA stars, some professionals, and amateurs are welcome to his open gym.
It feels unreal for the fans when these players play in casual matchups like these. They live being the professionals of the game, making every penny worth watching them.
Hines has been uploading his private runs lately, featuring stars like Julius Randle, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon. Jabari Smith, and many more. These workouts have been expected every off-season ever since he started this community.
Kevin Durant on pickup games
One of the prominent NBA stars actively playing in open run is the two-time champion Kevin Durant, believing that pickup games are training him as a player. He values it more than working alone since it provides live opponents, instead of stationary cones.
“As much as possible, play 5-on-5 against live bodies,” said Durant on his former advice to hoopers. “That’s more beneficial than just working out by yourself. My first few years in the league worked out at 10 o’clock in the morning. But then I’m playing pick-up all around the city outdoors.”
“I’m playing four or five games of pick-up just working on my instincts the whole day, four times a week. From like 19 years old ’til 24. So I’m just hooping against people, different sizes, shapes, guards, bigs. I’m just working on my game, playing pick-up.”
Durant also became part of these private runs, where fans have seen how good Durant was when scoring and how real his advice on training in pickup games was.
Recently, the 37-year-old superstar replied in a tweet regarding him being seen in an open gym working out with other NBA stars.
“I rather be in the gym working with NBA players than to spend a whole summer working in a gym by myself. I have no ego, just wanna improve brother,” he said.
