Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka shed light on Kevin Durant’s approach to joining his new team, emphasizing the star’s focus on empowerment rather than dominance.

Speaking about Durant’s first interactions with the roster, Udoka said the veteran forward’s message was clear: “He wants to kind of be implemented into the group and people not take a backseat to him. That’s his message to a lot of the young guys. Be who you are, continue to grow in those areas, and I’ll fit in where we see necessary.”

The remarks come weeks after Durant was officially acquired in a seven-team trade, the largest in NBA history. Houston parted with Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, draft rights to Khaman Maluach, and multiple future picks to secure the two-time Finals MVP.

Durant, a 15-time All-Star and former league MVP, enters his 18th NBA season averaging 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists across his career. Last year in Phoenix, he posted 26.6 points per game in 62 appearances before a late-season ankle injury sidelined him.

For the Rockets, Durant’s presence comes at a pivotal moment. The team features a mix of promising young talent such as Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson, and Reed Sheppard, alongside veterans Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams, and Clint Capela.

Udoka’s comments underline Houston’s developmental direction. Rather than shifting the offensive balance entirely toward Durant, the coaching staff wants the group’s rising players to maintain confidence and build chemistry with the future Hall of Famer.

Durant’s willingness to adapt stands out after years of carrying heavy offensive loads in Oklahoma City, Golden State, Brooklyn, and Phoenix. In Houston, the expectation is that his scoring ability will remain central, but the framework allows the younger core to keep progressing without being overshadowed.
