Rookie guard Tre Johnson III, the sixth overall pick by the Washington Wizards in the 2025 NBA Draft, is already studying some of the league’s most dynamic point guards. “I watch bits and pieces of Kyrie and Darius Garland, just from a guard’s perspective how they can change speeds,” Johnson said during a recent interview, via Chase Hughes of Monumental Sports Network.
The Texas standout enters the NBA after averaging 19.9 points, 2.7 assists, and nearly 40% from three-point range last season. His shooting ability was widely recognized before the draft, and his ball-handling has drawn attention following his Summer League performances in Las Vegas.
Second-year big man Alex Sarr praised Johnson’s playmaking abilities. “I like his play-making in general. I already knew that about him, but it’s just good to see. I feel like we’re just seeing the surface of what he’s capable of,” Sarr said.
Johnson’s development in creating opportunities for both himself and teammates could be crucial for a Wizards roster looking to return to playoff contention. The team has combined youth and experience, with veterans like Khris Middleton and CJ McCollum guiding a young backcourt that also features Bilal Coulibaly and AJ Johnson.
The Wizards’ roster construction reflects a commitment to blending sharpshooting with versatility. Johnson’s ability to absorb lessons from elite guards while leveraging his own strengths could make him a focal point of the offense.
Washington hopes Johnson’s confidence and skill set translate quickly into impact minutes. The franchise has emphasized a faster, more perimeter-oriented style under head coach Brian Keefe, and Johnson’s learning approach aligns with that vision.
