Washington Wizards rookie Tre Johnson discussed his NBA debut and future goals in an exclusive interview with Mark Medina of EssentiallySports. Johnson emphasized his work ethic and focus on improving all aspects of his game.

“Everybody is competing. Everybody is jelling together,” Johnson said, highlighting the importance of team cohesion in camp. “We’re trying to play fast on both ends and speed guys up.”

The 6th overall pick stressed the significance of rebounding and pressing to force opponents into poor shots. “That will help us push and go on offense,” he added, noting the team’s commitment to high-paced basketball.

Johnson has gained attention for his tireless gym work. “I’m the first one in and the last one to leave,” he said. “I’m just trying to get better with my game.” He credits this routine for his shooting consistency and overall development.

When asked about defense, Johnson acknowledged critics but remained confident. “People who have seen me play know that I can defend. It’s really about being solid on defense and being in the right spot,” he said.

Johnson also shared how veteran influence shaped his approach. “Just watching CJ [McCollum] professionally on and off the court, how he maintains his body and time on the court, it’s impressive,” he said.

The rookie revealed that Kevin Durant shaped his development. “He’s got great size and footwork. He always knows how to get to his spots on the court,” Johnson said. Reflecting on Durant’s longevity, he added, “He’s been taking care of his body during all of his years in the NBA. That’s the only way around it for him to be this good.”

Looking ahead, Johnson was candid about his first matchup against Durant, scheduled for November 12 when the Wizards face the Houston Rockets on the road. “It’ll be just another game,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’m still trying to win and we don’t have the same jersey on.”

On his rookie season goals, Johnson emphasized durability and team success. “I’m just trying to be able to play all 82, so I don’t miss many matchups,” he said. “I feel like we can accomplish whatever we want to accomplish. We just have to get on the same page.”

Johnson opened the 2025–26 season against the Milwaukee Bucks, posting 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists in 26 minutes despite Washington’s 133-120 loss.
