LeBron James’ NBA future remains uncertain as he continues to play at an elite level into his 40s.
According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, James has not made a firm decision on how long he intends to keep playing. “Based on my conversations, I honestly think they don’t know,” Windhorst said on The Hoop Collective podcast, via HoopsHype. “As far as I know, he’s honestly going year to year.”
James re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2024 on a two-year, $104 million contract that included a no-trade clause and a player option for 2025-26. His decision to opt into that option this offseason has only fueled speculation about how much longer he plans to play.
The 40-year-old has already achieved multiple milestones during the 2024-25 campaign. He became the oldest player in NBA history to record four consecutive triple-doubles, passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most minutes played, and surpassed 50,000 combined points between the regular season and playoffs.
James also made history with his son, Bronny, as the first father-son duo to share the court in an NBA game. He later broke Michael Jordan’s record for most 30-point games and climbed to seventh on the all-time steals list.
The Lakers, however, were eliminated in the first round of the 2025 playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, marking their second straight early exit. The franchise now faces questions about how long James will continue to anchor the roster.
At 40 years old, James remains one of the most productive players in the league. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists during the regular season, numbers that reflect both durability and consistency at a level rarely seen at his age.
