France started their EuroBasket 2025 campaign with a statement win, defeating Belgium 92-64 in Group D action at the Spodek in Katowice, Poland.
Les Bleus seized control early, holding Belgium to just 10 points in the first quarter. By halftime, the lead had stretched to 43-27, and Belgium never found a way back into the contest.
France’s athleticism and depth proved overwhelming as head coach Frederic Fauthoux’s squad kept the pressure on at both ends of the floor. A highlight came in the second quarter when Zaccharie Risacher threw down a poster dunk that set the tone for the rest of the night.
Bilal Coulibaly stood out with 12 points, six rebounds, and two emphatic blocks on Ismael Bako. The guard shot 5-of-7 from inside the arc and added a defensive spark that energized the French bench.
Elie Okobo chipped in 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while Nadir Hifi provided a quick burst of offense with 10 points in under nine minutes of play. Guerschon Yabusele added 11 points and nine made free throws, keeping France firmly in control.
France’s efficiency at the line was decisive, finishing 26-of-29 on free throws. They also outrebounded Belgium 39-33 and registered 16 assists, showcasing a balanced attack where every player contributed.
Belgium struggled to generate consistent scoring despite a few bright spots. Hans Vanwijn led the team with 13 points and five rebounds, while Ismael Bako scored 11 points and grabbed seven boards. Emmanuel Lecomte added nine points but committed five turnovers under France’s defensive pressure.
France’s defense limited Belgium to 35.7 percent shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers, many of which turned into fast-break points.
The win moves France to the top of Group D alongside Israel, who beat Iceland earlier in the day. Les Bleus will face Slovenia on August 30 in their second group-stage game, aiming to continue their strong start.
Belgium, meanwhile, will look to regroup against Iceland as they attempt to avoid an 0-2 hole in the standings.
