Alex Mumbru, the head coach of the German men’s national basketball team, has been sidelined due to what has been described as an “acute” infection.
According to the German basketball federation, his condition prevents him from being on the sidelines for at least the opening match of the upcoming tournament.
The DBB made the situation official with the following statement:
“The German men’s national team will be without national coach Alex Mumbru for the opening match of EuroBasket (Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Germany vs. Montenegro, 3:30 p.m. CET).
The head coach is suffering from an acute infection and was taken to the hospital in Tampere, Finland, yesterday for precautionary measures. He is receiving inpatient treatment there and is now feeling significantly better.
It is currently unclear when Mumbru will be able to return to the team. DBB national coach Alan Ibrahimagic will continue his duties as head coach in the meantime.”
This development comes at an unfortunate time for Germany, which had been counting on Mumbru’s leadership as they begin their EuroBasket campaign.
While reports indicate his condition has already improved, the uncertainty around his exact return leaves the team in a delicate situation, forcing assistant coach Alan Ibrahimagic to step into the lead role at a critical stage of the competition.
Not an ideal #Eurobasket start for the Germanshttps://t.co/RDiaMHbzhV
