Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas was arrested in Southern California on Wednesday, accused of running an illegal gambling operation.

Federal prosecutors allege that Arenas and five others used his Encino mansion to host high-stakes card games between September 2021 and July 2022. Authorities say Arenas hired a 51-year-old to help manage the setup and collect rent for the events.

To create an upscale gambling experience, the group allegedly brought in servers, chefs, valets, and security staff. Prosecutors claim they profited by taking a rake – a cut from each pot – during the games.

Arenas and his co-defendants face two federal charges: conspiracy to run an illegal gambling business and operating such a business. Each count carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison.

Arenas is also charged with making false statements to federal agents. The 43-year-old is expected to appear in court later Wednesday.
