The New York Knicks have received permission to speak with Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Pablo Prigioni about potentially joining new head coach Mike Brown’s staff, according to Ian Begley of SNY.
Prigioni, a former NBA point guard, played for the Knicks from 2012 to 2015. He began his coaching career in 2017 and had a stint with the Brooklyn Nets in 2018–19 before joining the Timberwolves.
He has been with Minnesota for six seasons, originally hired by Ryan Saunders and retained by current head coach Chris Finch. Begley notes that Prigioni is well-respected in coaching circles.
Before hiring Mike Brown, the Knicks were blocked by several teams when trying to speak with five current NBA head coaches.
Now, as they try to fill the lead assistant role, they’ve faced similar challenges. New York was reportedly denied permission to talk to James Borrego (Pelicans) and Jay Triano (Mavericks).
They were also believed to be interested in Darvin Ham, but the Bucks wouldn’t release him. Although Warriors assistant Terry Stotts is staying put, it’s unclear if the Knicks had serious interest in him.
While it’s not confirmed that Prigioni is being considered for the lead assistant spot, it’s likely, since teams usually don’t allow staff to interview elsewhere unless it’s for a promotion.
