Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors are locked in a contract stalemate, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Talks between the restricted free agent and the team have stalled, with Kuminga reportedly in “no rush” to sign a deal.
Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, has pushed for a contract averaging at least $25 million per year, even on a short-term basis. The Warriors have been unwilling to meet that figure in a long-term deal.
Meanwhile, Kuminga is frustrated with his inconsistent role, especially being a fallback option during crunch time and the postseason under head coach Steve Kerr, which has caused some lingering tension.
While Turner is exploring sign-and-trade options, teams like the Suns and Kings have made concrete offers. Both have promised Kuminga a starting role and significant playing time – two things he highly values.
However, Golden State has so far rejected those offers, keeping the situation unresolved. Other teams rumored to be interested include the Wizards, Heat, Bulls, Bucks, and Nets.
This contract impasse is also delaying other Warriors offseason plans. They’re eyeing free agents like Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Seth Curry, but can’t proceed until Kuminga’s situation is settled.
The Warriors currently have only nine players under standard contracts.
Kuminga’s 2024–25 season was marred by injury (sprained ankle) and inconsistent minutes. He played in just 47 games, averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 24.3 minutes.
Despite being benched during key late-season and playoff moments, he finished strong – averaging 24.3 points on efficient shooting in the final four playoff games against Minnesota after Steph Curry was injured.
