The San Antonio Spurs are exploring a long-term extension with guard De’Aaron Fox, who is entering the final year of his contract.
According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, a Spurs front office executive confirmed the organization’s intention to retain Fox well beyond the 2025–26 season.
“When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course,” the executive told Smith. “We see De’Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We’re hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.”
Fox, 27, arrived in San Antonio on February 3 in a blockbuster three-team trade involving the Kings and Bulls.
Since the trade, Fox has started all 17 games for San Antonio, averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 34.0 minutes per contest.
Though his scoring numbers dipped slightly from his Sacramento averages, Fox’s playmaking and experience have stood out on a young roster headlined by Victor Wembanyama.
The 6-foot-3 guard is currently on the final season of a five-year, $163 million contract he originally signed with the Kings in 2020. He will become an unrestricted free agent next summer if no extension is reached.
Over eight NBA seasons, Fox has played 531 regular-season games, averaging 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 47.0% from the field.
He was named an All-Star in 2023 and helped lead Sacramento to its first playoff appearance in 17 years that same season.
