Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic and the team remain in sync about his contract future, despite the three-time MVP choosing not to sign an extension this summer. According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the decision is a strategic one and not a sign of discontent.

Smith reported that a Nuggets front office executive said, “No worry at all. It’s the smart move from his side, if I’m being honest. He can lock in an extra year next year, which is the way to do it when you are in his position. Same offer, plus one more year, will be there for him a year now from now. He knows that, and we’re all on the same page.”

The current extension available to Jokic is a three-year deal worth approximately $206.4 million. By waiting until the summer of 2026, he becomes eligible for a more lucrative four-year contract potentially valued at $285.4 million.

Sam Amick of The Athletic added during an appearance on Sactown Sports 1140 that there are no indications Jokic is considering leaving Denver. However, he cautioned that the situation remains fluid and suggested the team should avoid complacency.

The Nuggets are coming off a season where they reached the second round of the playoffs under a restructured management and coaching staff. Despite that, the front office has publicly reiterated its commitment to building a championship-contending roster around Jokic.

Jokic, 30, delivered another dominant campaign in 2024–25, averaging 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists over 70 regular-season games. In the playoffs, he continued his elite production, posting 26.2 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game across 14 contests.
