Nikola Jokic, the star player for the Denver Nuggets, is not expected to sign a contract extension this summer. However, according to Sam Amick from The Athletic, who spoke recently on Sactown Sports 1140, there are currently no indications that Jokic is thinking about leaving Denver anytime soon.

Still, Amick cautions that the situation is fluid and could change, emphasizing that the Nuggets organization shouldn’t become complacent until Jokic officially commits to a new deal.

Amick explained, “What this means is that Jokic will face another important decision next summer. If the upcoming season doesn’t go well for Denver, you can’t discount how that might influence his choices. Sure, waiting allows him to sign a longer, four-year extension with a higher total value, and it might even be strategically better aligned with his future contract negotiations once he’s older.

“So there are plenty of valid reasons why he might hold off signing now. But it’s worth remembering that the Nuggets are coming off a year where they changed their coach and general manager, and while they did make it to the second round of the playoffs, the front office and players alike are aiming for championships.”

He also gave credit to Denver’s revamped management, describing them as “off to a really strong start.” Nevertheless, Amick noted that fans would likely feel more at ease if Jokic had already agreed to the extension.

As things stand, the three-time NBA MVP is expected to delay his decision until 2026, when he will be eligible to sign a more lucrative four-year contract potentially worth $285.4 million, rather than the shorter three-year deal valued at $206.4 million currently available.
