Damian Lillard is headed back to the Portland Trail Blazers, signing a three-year, $42 million deal that marks an emotional homecoming for the veteran guard.
According to The Oregonian/OregonLive reporter Aaron Fentress, who shared details on the Blazer Focused podcast, Lillard’s decision stemmed largely from his desire to be close to his family and dissatisfaction with his stint in Milwaukee.
“I was told just even a week ago — don’t count out Portland,” Fentress said, via HoopsHype. “You cannot put a price on family. You cannot put a price on missing your children. And Dame is a serious family man who loves his kids.”
Lillard was traded to the Bucks before the 2023-24 season after requesting a move, though his preference was to join the Miami Heat. His agent persuaded him to accept Milwaukee for a better championship opportunity, but the fit never materialized.
Injuries to Giannis Antetokounmpo and coaching changes under Doc Rivers disrupted the Bucks’ season, while Lillard struggled to find comfort off the court away from his family.
Sources told Fentress that Lillard and Blazers’ management — including GM Joe Cronin and coach Chauncey Billups — engaged in several conversations this offseason about his return.
Portland also reacquired Jrue Holiday, whom they had traded away after the original Lillard deal, signaling their intent to field a more competitive roster.
The Bucks opted to stretch Lillard’s remaining $113 million salary over five years, clearing space to sign Myles Turner, and paving the way for Lillard to re-sign in Portland.
Although he is currently recovering from a torn Achilles and is not expected to play during the 2025-26 season, the 34-year-old reportedly insisted on a no-trade clause and likely secured a player option for 2027-28 to finish his career with the franchise that drafted him.
