The Los Angeles Lakers may be ready to part ways with LeBron James sooner than expected, according to a Suns insider John Gambadoro who commented on the team’s internal stance Saturday.

The insider, who previously reported friction between James, Austin Reaves, and Luka Doncic, tweeted “They would like to move on from him ASAP” in response to an ESPN report by Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst. The ESPN story detailed how the Lakers, by not extending James beyond his current deal, have already set an end date for his tenure as the franchise’s face.

James, 40, picked up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 season, but his dissatisfaction with the organization’s “futuristic mindset” has become evident.

Shams Charania of ESPN told SiriusXM NBA Radio this week that James wants to compete for a championship immediately, while the front office focuses on long-term plans centered on Luka Doncic.

Los Angeles has shifted its priorities since its first-round playoff exit, trading Anthony Davis to Dallas for Doncic and making minor additions such as Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia. Doncic is eligible for a contract extension starting August 2, though he is expected to finalize it after EuroBasket 2025.

For now, James remains under contract, and despite social media hints suggesting his unhappiness, team insiders expect him to report to training camp. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon addressed speculation of a buyout on Get Up, saying the Lakers intend to keep James for at least the upcoming season.
