LeBron James is expected to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025–26 season, despite recent speculation fueled by his social media activity and the team’s shifting priorities.

On ESPN’s Get Up, Tim MacMahon addressed rumors of a possible buyout, dismissing the notion that the Lakers would part ways with the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

“My guess is that he won’t exactly be thrilled, but he will be there for training camp and he will be in a Lakers uniform this season,” MacMahon said Thursday, via HoopsHype.

James, 40, exercised his $52.6 million player option earlier this offseason, solidifying his contract status with Los Angeles. However, his cryptic posts and comments have kept fans and league insiders guessing about his true intentions.

While the Lakers continue to improve their roster — adding Jake LaRavia and Deandre Ayton after a first-round playoff loss to Minnesota — their main focus this summer is reportedly securing Luka Doncic to a long-term extension.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Lakers view Doncic as the centerpiece of their future plans. “There is no update. LeBron is continuing to watch, but… the number one most important thing for the Lakers this offseason is getting Luka Doncic into a contract extension,” Windhorst said.

Doncic, acquired in a February trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas, will become eligible for an extension on August 2. However, he is expected to delay negotiations until after competing with Slovenia in EuroBasket 2025, which runs through mid-September.

The 26-year-old guard averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists during the regular season and played through a back injury in the playoffs, underscoring his importance to the Lakers’ future.

Meanwhile, James remains a key piece for the Lakers in the short term as the franchise transitions to the post-LeBron era.

For now, all indications point to James suiting up in purple and gold once again when training camp opens this fall.
