Damian Lillard and the Boston Celtics have mutual interest as the veteran guard enters free agency following his expected waiver by the Milwaukee Bucks.
Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe reported that Lillard “would consider signing with the Celtics,” noting his close friendship with Jayson Tatum from their time on the 2020 Team USA roster in Tokyo.
This marks a notable shift in Lillard’s stance, as he previously showed little enthusiasm for Boston when the Portland Trail Blazers explored trading him several years ago. The Celtics are reportedly intrigued by the possibility of adding the nine-time All-Star to their roster.
Milwaukee opted to waive Lillard to clear salary cap space, stretching the remaining $113 million on his contract over five years. This move facilitated the Bucks’ acquisition of Myles Turner, who signed a four-year, $107 million deal after leaving the Indiana Pacers.
Lillard’s two-season stint with the Bucks included an average of 24.9 points and 7.1 assists per game, but it was cut short by a torn Achilles tendon suffered during the 2025 playoffs. He is now recovering from the injury and is not expected to return to full action until at least 2026.
While Boston has emerged as a serious suitor, other franchises — including the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors — are also monitoring the situation. Reportedly, more than 10 teams have already expressed interest in signing Lillard if the “terms and conditions are right.”
One potential complication is Lillard’s stated preference to rehab in Portland to remain close to his family, which could limit his ability to integrate with a new team immediately. Still, teams view him as a high-upside long-term investment due to his leadership and scoring pedigree.
With the NBA’s moratorium on signings lifting Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CT, Milwaukee is expected to make Lillard’s waiver official shortly thereafter.
