Mavericks overhaul coaching staff

The Dallas Mavericks are undergoing a major shakeup to Jason Kidd’s coaching staff after all three of his lead assistants from last season left for new opportunities.

Jared Dudley was officially announced as the lead assistant to David Adelman with the Denver Nuggets. Dudley, who spent four years on the Mavericks’ bench, joins former Dallas guard JJ Barea on Adelman’s staff.

Sean Sweeney, Kidd’s top defensive assistant, accepted a role as associate head coach with the San Antonio Spurs earlier this offseason. Meanwhile, Alex Jensen departed to become the head coach at the University of Utah.

To fill the vacancies, the Mavericks agreed to deals with Frank Vogel and Jay Triano. Both bring head coaching experience and are expected to join Kidd on the front of the bench. Dallas is still searching for a third assistant to complete the group.

In addition to those moves, player development specialist God Shammgod also exited the franchise. Shammgod, known for mentoring guards during his nearly decade-long tenure in Dallas, rejoined Jamahl Mosley’s Orlando Magic staff.

The Mavericks finished the 2024–25 season with a 39–43 record, securing the 10th seed in the Western Conference and advancing past the Kings in the Play-In before falling to the Memphis Grizzlies. Following the season, Dallas used the No. 1 overall draft pick to select Duke freshman Cooper Flagg.
