The Denver Nuggets have traded Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cam Johnson. This marks a strategic shift for Denver as they look to reshape their wing rotation.
NBA insider Shams Charania said, “I’m told the Nuggets prioritized getting a fresh start not only for Michael Porter Jr. but for their wing depth as well. This is a major change from what we’ve known.”
The Nuggets won the 2023 championship with Porter Jr. playing a key role, but the team wanted a new look in that position.
Nikola Jokic expressed his desire for more versatility and depth at the wing by the end of the last season. Charania added, “They got some three-and-D play now with Cam Johnson as well.” Johnson is known for his shooting and defensive capabilities, which fits the Nuggets’ evolving roster.
Alongside the trade, Denver also reached a one-year deal to re-sign Bruce Brown, who is valued for his all-around contributions. Charania noted, “They also reached an agreement on a one-year deal to bring back fan favorite do-it-all Bruce Brown Jr. tonight as well.”
Porter Jr. has averaged 18.2 points per game this season, with solid shooting splits and rebounding for a wing. However, Denver appears to be prioritizing roster flexibility and fresh energy on the perimeter.
Johnson, 28, has consistently delivered as a three-and-D forward during his six NBA seasons. He averaged 18.8 points and shot close to 39% from three-point range this season with the Nets. His defensive versatility and spacing fit Denver’s needs.
